The protea was chosen as it is a uniquely South African flower and is also found in our main Orthopaedic Association (SAOA)’s logo.
The symbolism of the protea really fits in with the ethos of SAFOSS.

Proteas flowers are symbols of someone’s daring nature and boldness that simply shines through.
Linked to the blooming character of the flower.
They grow in various habitats from stony and moist meadows to sandy areas along the coast and tolerate high temperature and can survive below the snow.
The message behind the Protea flower is to always be courageous and display your uniqueness. It symbolizes the resilience of Orthopaedic women who succeeds regardless of the environment they find themselves in.
This symbolizes are main three goals: mentorship, career progression and promotion of women in Orthopaedics and attracting junior female medical students and junior doctors to specialise in Orthopaedics.
The face of course represents the female members of our society.
These tie in with the Orthopaedic symbolism. The rope and stake are holding up the Protea bush to support it. The face in profile is also connected to the bush and thus symbolizes the importance of female Orthopaedic surgeons to Orthopaedics.
